Community Support Lends to a Fantastic Library Halloween
Thanks to everyone who contributed!
On Halloween, Turon Community Library hosted a trunk or treat and open house. We passed out candy, played games, and dispensed prizes to approximately thirty area children, with a total of 78 visitors coming through the library that night!
Thank you to everyone who allowed us to be a part of your Halloween festivities! What an honor and a joy to celebrate with you.
We lined cars up on the east side of the building, hoping that would give trick-or-treaters a safer location from which to visit each vehicle. Once done getting candy outside, the children were encouraged to come inside for more fun and games. They could guess how much candy was in a Halloween bucket to win both the bucket and the candy in it! In “Gourds and Ghosts” children rolled pumpkins down the library stacks to knock over as many ghosts as they could. Then they were given a change to “Ring the Witch”. They had to toss glow stick rings around witch hats. It was a lot harder than it seemed! We had a few little goblins who gave up and just dropped the rings on the witch hat. That is okay. We librarians always encourage individuality and uniqueness. Finally, we had “Graveyard Pong”. The children bounced, or threw, eye balls into cups to win a prize. It was more candy…
Libraries are fun. We are centers for learning. And, there are numerous studies pointing to the advantages of both play, and community, in child development, which is why library programs such as this are so essential to our neighborhood. From teaching fine motor skills essential for writing; to learning and modeling communication patterns; to fostering creativity, imagination, and problem solving; play time is a foundation for literacy skills.
It is a form of magic!
By participating in library programing, through attendance at the events, or as a volunteer, you are investing in the community and in the education and development of local children, through both play and literacy. Your support makes all of this possible. You are part of the magic!
So to those in the community who came and supported us, thank you.
To everyone who manned a vehicle to pass out candy, we owe you our gratitude.
Additionally, we want to thank the City of Turon, the mayor, council members, and city workers without whom we could not have achieved this amazing turnout. Not only did they graciously allow us free use of the building, including the gym in the event of rain, they helped sponsor the event as well.
Lastly, a special thank you to Eydie Green, and Elizabeth Tenner, two individual sponsors of this event. Your contributions are valued and appreciated.
So many people came together to make Halloween a fun, safe, and enjoyable experience for all involved. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
